By now you may have heard about Dr. Moreno’s updated version of the 17 Day Diet. In his new book, The 17 Day Diet Breakthrough Edition, the doctor includes new fat-burning techniques to the 17 Day Diet.
One of these techniques is the optional Transitional Day Fast. To summarize, the new day fast is one day where you only consume fat-burning smoothies for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as your required water and green tea intake.
Recently, a question from a 17DD Blog Facebook fan was asked by Natalie B.:
I complete cycle 1 on the 17th. I plan to fast on the 18th. I have a dinner to go to for my husbands work on the 21st, at a home, of a couple I don’t know, so I have totally no control of what will be served to me. Am I able to fast again on the 22nd?
Here is my response to Natalie’s question about the optional Transitional Day Fast:
Natalie, in the new breakthrough edition book by Dr. Moreno, he talks about how you can use this fast day either in between each cycle or as a jumpstart if you have a bad day and need to get back on track (like over eating something that you shouldn’t have). I think use your best judgment. If you don’t overdo it and don’t gain any weight, continue on your C2. If you get out of control, do a fast day. Let us know how it goes!
The doctor further explains in his new book that this fast day is purely optional and only you know if this is something you can do. If you’re not sure if you can handle a fast day, you may try it to see how your body reacts.
What about coffee ?
Michelle, the book does not say anything about not having coffee on a fast day that I can recall.
Is it safe to exercise during the fast day?
Kyrie, I couldn’t find in the book where it talks about exercise and the fast day. Best to use your judgement since you know how your body works best. If you do exercise, probably best to make it low-impact (that’s my gut telling me this).
Is Honey allowed as a sweetener? I just bought a great salad dressing with only 5 ingredients and one of them is honey so I would love to use it.
I love your site it is very informative.
Shari
Hi Shari! Honey is pretty much sugar, so technically, not 17dd-approved!
Hi
I did then diet a few years…lost 30 pounds but gained back 15 during a stressful time. Anyways…I am ready to go again….my body hates carbs and I rewlly liked this diet and felt so good. So, I like the addition of the shake days in between cycles. Everyday right now I have a shake with 1 cup almond milk, 6 oz plain greek yogurt, 2T flaxseed, 2 Tbrown rice protein powder, 1/2 cup frozen berries Ana’s a handful of greens. what do you think about me continuing to have this shake every morning for breakfast. It is such a routine for me now and holds me all morning. I am just not sure about the almond milk..cause of the carbs..and the brown rice protein powder. The recipe is actually from dr oz. also, how about my recipe for the fast days…just not sure if the brown rice protein powder is ok.
One mor question…..love my coffee..hate it black. I have discovered coconut milks….very low in carbs. Avoid or go for it, even in cycle one?
Marianne, I’m all about experimenting and customizing the 17 Day Diet to fit my lifestyle. You can certainly try using these very same shakes and see if you lose weight. If you find your weight loss has plateaued, then either omit the shake or switch out some of the ingredients. I think the fast day smoothies are specially formulated, but maybe start a transition day with your special breakfast shake, and use the other recipes for the lunch and dinner smoothie. Just try it and see what happens!
I thought we weren’t supposed to eat fruits after 2pm? I was looking at the smoothie recipes for the Transitional Fast day and there’s fruit in the “dinner” smoothie. Thoughts?
No fruit after 2pm on regular days. The transitional day fast is new (as of 2014) and the 2pm rule does not apply as the smoothies are your complete meals for the entire day. This is how the doctor has structured the transition day.
Torey, on the transitional day fast how much protein per serving do I need to buy. I noticed a lot have different amounts. Thanks.
Denise, the book doesn’t really say how much protein per serving. It just says (for the breakfast smoothie) one scoop. The others are one serving. I’d follow the recommended serving size on the whey protein that you use.
