Do I have to drink the hot lemon water?

Is Hot Lemon Water Something I Have to Drink? This is a question asked all too often for those starting the 17 Day Diet.

If you want to stay strictly by the 17 Day Diet rules, then yes…drink the hot lemon water each morning after you wake up.  See page 48 in Dr. Moreno’s book.

Lemons contain a host of important vitamins and nutrients such as Vitamin C, B-1, B-2, B-6, and riboflavin.

Lemons also contain calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.

According to Livestrong.com,  when you combine lemon with hot water, you are allowing its nutrients to help eliminate waste within your body.  Hot lemon water helps flush toxins out of your body– it’s a perfect compliment to Cycle 1 as you are eliminating carbs and sugar.

Hot lemon water also aides in weight loss.  Without drinking this concoction, you risk suffering from constipation and diarrhea more so than if you skipped this morning wake-up drink all together.

Hot lemon water first thing in the morning stimulates your digestive juices and gets things flowing.  Sure, you can skip this part of the diet all together, but there are many reasons above why you shouldn’t.

  1. Hey, I really appreciate your blog since the book also left me with a lot of questions.
How do you know all the answers? I was wondering, does it matter if you use green lemons or lemon juice from a bottle? Or does it have to be yellow lemons?

    • I’ve read the book like 50 times. Some of the answers are hidden in chapters you wouldn’t think of. Also, a lot of it is just common sense as the 17 day Diet really is about low-glycemic and low-fat. Lemons any color should be OK. Lemon juice from a bottle is OK, too.

  2. Drinking warm water with lemon first thing in the morning is acidic to me. Would drinking green tea with lemon accomplish the same results? Personally, the tea makes it taste less acidic, than plain water and lemon.

  3. i find this hot water and lemon thing difficult. how much lemon juice should you use if you don’t use the lemon? i realized that the lemons i had were really big. will buy smaller ones and now i just keep the lemon half in my water glass all day after i drink the hot water & lemon.

    • Many people don’t like the hot lemon water. I personally don’t think it’s 100% necessary, but it does provide great benefits. If you’re not using a half of a lemon, try using about 2 Tablespoons of lemon juice from the bottle.

    • Try using a straw when you drink the lemon water. It helps “get it down” and it also bypasses your teeth with all that acidity.

  4. I started acid cider vinegar 2 months ago …and almost right away felt immensely better.
I thought I might have fibermyagia, went to Dr & he said didn’t, ..so he ran blood test. Too much sugar, and on the way to diabetes (a warning)!!! That day some one told me about ACV & I happen to have some so I started….Like a miracle, my pain subsided & after about 10 days _____it WAS GONE, I SWEAR! I took it AM, Noonish & PM……. 2 tbspns in WATER AND ADDED A LOCAL
HONEY,,, WHICH WAS RECOMMENDED FOR TOLERABLE. I NOW TAKE 2 tbspns TWICE A DAY
.it evidently removed crystals from my joints and did a liver cleanse. And very, very little acid indigestion ….I HAD IT EXTREMELY BAD (2 NEXIUM daily). I no longer take it.
It has tons of vitamins & minerals like the lemon. SO TAKE YOUR LEMON In FILTERED WATER
LIKE RECOMMEMDED OR TRY ACID CIDER VINEGAR (BRAGGS is what I use). Be consistent !!!

  5. I would encourage you to brush your teeth BEFORE injesting the ACV or the lemon water. If you follow up with brushing after these are injected, you will do more harm to the enamel on your teeth due to the acidic nature of the lemon or vinegar. To those whose teeth are already sensitive or who are prone to decay, brush with a good fluoride toothpaste before injesting these acidic liquids. Then rinse your mouth immediately afterwards.

  6. I have been using lemon essential oil that I bought from the DoTerra website instead of fresh lemons. Is that an okay substitute? If so, how many drops of essential oil would equal the half of a lemon that is recommended?

    • Christy, I’m not really sure if lemon essential oil gives the same benefit as lemon juice. I don’t know much about essential oil. If you find out, please comment back!

  7. What do you think about the whole lemon- rine and all? I have a Vitamix and I cut up a half lemon to 1 cup of water and pulverize the entire lemon. Is this ok?

    • Ariail, I’m not sure if it makes much difference or not. I do know that the hot lemon water needs to be hot or warm. Are you thinking of this? I think the water being warmed up is a component to this. Otherwise, if you add some ice to your recipe, this might be a refreshing drink aside from the hot lemon water.

      • I’m confused is it half a lemon or a whole lemon? You’ve said both. This morning was my first morning on 17dd with the wake up drink and I used a whole lemon, per the book. Is there ANY WAY to make the taste more tolerable and the feeling less acidy? The lemons I use are just smaller than a tennis ball.

        • Hi Heather, there are inconsistencies/changes with the 17DD –not sure which is which. The first book says use 1/2 lemon and the new breakthrough edition a whole lemon. Try using juice from 1/2 lemon to see if this helps. You might also try a bit of sweetener to see if this helps with the taste.

  8. I took have been reading a lot about the lemon water. From what I’ve found, there are no scientific results saying that lemon juice is helpful. Also on the con side – daily lemon juice will break down tooth enamel (unless you drink it from a straw) and that ONLY lemon juice from a real lemon will have results, NOT from a bottle. I can’t see the benefits.

    • There have actually been plenty of studies done that show the benefits of consuming lemon in water. I use organic lemons. :)

      • I would love to read one of the studies you’re speaking of. I’ve read a lot of articles that state hot lemon water is good for you, but I’ve not read anything that scientifically proves it.

  9. I’m doing warm to hot lemon water with 2 shakes of cayenne pepper. After about 2 weeks it actually started tasting sweet to me!! (And I have such a sweet tooth!)
I actually really love it now (2 months down the line…)
Hope it grows on all of you! I believe it’s worth it.

  10. One thing I’m worried about is what the acid would do to my teeth as I drink it around the same time as brushing my teeth…??

    Reply
    • Dorette, the hot lemon water needs to be consumed the first thing in the morning (within a half hour of waking up). So unless you’re brushing your teeth before you eat, you should be fine.

  11. I’m also having trouble with the acidity of the hot lemon water so, I started to add 1tsp local raw & unfiltered honey. But could this addition be hindering my weight loss progress?

    • Cherie, I’d recommend skipping the hot lemon water before adding extra sugar to your diet. If the hot lemon water is too acidic for you, go ahead and stop drinking it for now.

  15. Interesting, when I first started I inquired on Dr Moreno’s website and they said to not use any sweetener with this. Now that I’m doing a follow up to drop some lbs I have put back on I wonder if it is OK to add my apple cider vinegar to this and get both in at the same time? Any thoughts

    • I know many of the members of my community use apple cider vinegar with their lemon juice and have been getting great results. I say give it a try!
