Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

Greek Chicken Souvlaki With Yogurt Sauce

I’m in love with Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce, but I always thought it would be difficult to make until now.

Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

There are so many ways to enhance the flavor of your meals, especially with Greek-inspired seasonings.

I think this is the secret to staying motivated with the 17 Day Diet.

It’s easy to get bored with the same chicken recipes… you know the ones I’m talking about, right?

The broiled chicken with salt, pepper and garlic and maybe a seasoning or two.

If this describes you, then you must check out this Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce recipe. It’s divine!

Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

I was browsing Instagram one day because I, too, was tired of the same old chicken dinner.

I stumbled upon this yummy recipe for Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce and thought, why not!

Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

The flavor of this chicken souvlaki reminds me of one of my favorite little restaurants on Maui – they serve the best Greek gyros.

I’ll admit, they make them better than I could, but this chicken souvlaki has the same flavors and it’s a pretty darn close second!

Plus, I don’t have to fly over the ocean to satisfy my craving!

Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

I’ll be honest with you – the chicken by itself is pretty darn tasty, but the stars of the show are the yogurt sauce and the fresh cucumber and tomato relish.

When you combine all three together, you have a masterpiece! Yes, it’s really that good!

Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

I made a few changes to the original recipe to slim it down a bit, plus make it easier to read. The recipe really focuses on simple ingredients that pack in a lot of flavor!

That’s my kind of recipe!

Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

I’m all about Mediterranean flavors, so this recipe is a no-brainer for me.

I especially love Greek Gyros made with lamb like the ones I love on Maui. So when it’s not convenient to grab a gyro or to fly across the Pacific, this is the next best thing!

Greek Chicken Souvlaki with Yogurt Sauce

This recipe is perfect for all cycles of the 17 Day Diet, and you can add extras like hummus and pita bread if you’re on Cycle 2 or 3, respectively.

Yield: 2-3 Servings
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes
Basic ingredients for a Greek flavor that feels like it took all day to create.

Ingredients

For the chicken:

  • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch chunks
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice
  • 3 Tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

For the yogurt sauce:

  • 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt
  • 1/4 cup of sour cream (or an additional 1/4 cup of Greek yogurt if you prefer)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup minced cucumber
  • 2 Tablespoons minced fresh parsley or dill

For the relish:

  • 1/4 cup minced cucumber
  • 1/4 cup minced seeded tomato
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 Tablespoons minced parsley
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

For the chicken skewers:

If you're using wooden skewers, soak in water for 30 minutes to prevent burning.

In a large bowl, add the lemon juice, olive oil, oregano, salt, pepper and garlic, and mix well to combine. Add the chicken pieces and toss to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or place chicken in a sealable bag and allow chicken to marinate for at least 10 minutes or up to 1 hour inside the refrigerator.

Heat a grill or grill pan over medium heat. If you don't have either, you may use your oven and preheat the broiler.

Remove the chicken from the marinade and thread the chicken pieces onto skewers.

If grilling, place the chicken on the grill and cook for 5 minutes on each side or until chicken is cooked through to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.

If you're using your oven's broiler, broil for 8-10 minutes or until chicken is cooked through to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.

While the chicken is cooking prepare the sauce and relish.

For the yogurt sauce:

In a small bowl, add the Greek yogurt, sour cream, cucumber and parsley and mix well to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Place in the refrigerator until ready for use, or for up to 1 day.

For the relish:

In a small bowl, add the tomato, cucumber and parsley, lemon juice and olive oil. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Mix all ingredients well. Place in the refrigerator until ready for use, or for up to 1 day.

Serve the chicken skewers with the yogurt sauce and cucumber relish.

Notes

Approved all cycles.

For a cycle 2, serve with hummus, and Cycle 3 you may serve with flatbread.

Hi Kate! I’m so glad you liked it! For the future, if you don’t have all the ingredients on hand for the yogurt sauce or relish, the marinade sauce for the chicken is perfect by itself for chicken breasts and a side of veggies! I use it quite often when I need extra flavor!
